SHS Academic Eligibility Requirements

SEVERANCE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics at Severance High School, all students will be required to meet a three-fold eligibility standard. The standard(s) shall include:

  1. CHSAA Semester Eligibility Requirements

During the period of participation, the student must be enrolled in courses which offer, in aggregate, a minimum of 2.5 academic units of credit per semester and must pass a minimum of the equivalent of 2.5 academic units of credit.  Typically, 2.5 academic units of credit is 5 classes.

During the preceding (18 week grading period) semester of attendance, the student must have passed a minimum of 2.5 academic units of credit during the previous semester.

For purposes of eligibility, a semester is considered to begin on the first pupil contact day as defined by the Department of Education, following the completion of the preceding semester. Further, a student will be considered to have attended a school if he/she has been enrolled for 15 days or has competed interscholastically at any time and at any level during that semester.

Regaining Eligibility — Students who have not met the academic requirements at the close of a semester may regain academic eligibility on Monday of the NFHS/CHSAA Week 9-12 (depending on the sport) for the first semester and on the Monday of Week 36 of the NFHS/CHSAA calendar for the second semester.  Summer school credit can be used to replace failed grades in the same subject area to regain eligibility for fall semester, if those credits are completed by Monday of Week 9 of the NFHS/CHSAA calendar. Exception: Winter sport athletes who have been declared ineligible for the first semester and did not participate in a fall sport shall use the athlete’s grades on the first day of winter practice to determine if eligibility is regained.

  1. Weekly Check of Grades:

To participate in athletics, students must maintain minimum academic standards as defined below:

       1)  All student-athletes’ grades are to be checked on a weekly basis.

    1. Official grade checks are run every Friday morning. If a student is determined to be academically ineligible (as defined below) he/she cannot participate in any athletic contests for the entire following week (Monday-Sunday).
    2. If a student believes any part of the grade check is inaccurate (ie the report shows they are failing a class that they are actually passing) it is their responsibility to contact both the teacher and the athletic director before the end of school on Friday, the day the report was pulled.
  1. Students will be considered ineligible for any of the following:
    1. If the student is enrolled in 5 classes they will be ineligible if:
      1. The student is failing any class
    2. If the student is enrolled in 6 or more classes they will be ineligible if:
      1. The student is failing 2 or more classes

  1. Attendance and Citizenship

To participate in athletics, students must follow a minimum code of conduct as defined below:

  1. If a student has an unexcused absence from class on the day of an activity he/she will not be permitted participation that day or evening.
  2. School Discipline Referral – Any student referred to the office for school rule violations may be denied the privilege of participation in all extracurricular activities for a period to be determined by the school administration. This eligibility suspension will not exceed one (1) school year.
  3. School Law Enforcement Referral – Any student referred to law enforcement authorities by school officials for school rule violations may be denied the privilege of participation in all extracurricular activities for a period determined by the school administration.  The eligibility suspension will not exceed one (1) school year.
  4. Arrest – Any student who is arrested for a felony or gross misdemeanor during school hours, school functions, and on the way to or from participating in a school event may be denied the privilege of participating in all extracurricular activities for a period determined by the school administration. This eligibility suspension will not exceed one (1) school year.
