On Thursday night, the Silver Knights took on the Niwot Cougars in what turned out to be another high-scoring affair. Niwot took the 1-0 lead early on in the game with a nice bit of combination play that ended with a shot that just slid past the diving hands of Philip Vigil. After a slow start, the Silver Knights scored three straight goals after a flurry of attacking moves. The first goal was scored by sophomore forward, Tyler DiPietro. Goal #2 was scored by Freshman captain, Kilian Schultz (this was his first goal of the year). Quickly, Jahaziel Gonzales started his goal-scoring tally for the season after rounding the keeper on the end of a through ball from Tyler DiPietro. The attack began with a wonderful interception in the midfield from Dalton Lesser. With 15 minutes remaining in the first half, the Silver Knights looked to be in control.
After a couple of mental lapses defensively, Niwot was able to tie the game up at 3-3 as the game went to half time. Niwot continued with their momentum and went up 5-3 with 20 minutes left in the game. However, after a bit of grit and fight, Severance was able to tie the game up after a fantastic header from Kilian Schultz and an individual effort from Tyler DiPietro. Kilian’s goal was beautifully assisted by Jovanny Gonzales on a diagonal ball into the box.
With six minutes remaining, Niwot scored on a nicely placed free-kick following a foul on the top of the Severance box. The end score of this back-and-forth game ended at 6-5 in favor of the visitors. Defending will certainly be the focus of the Silver Knights as they move forward in the season.
